   About us

The Johannesburg Child Welfare Society (JCWS) is one of the largest children's NGO's in South Africa. Founded in 1909, the Society has been at the forefront of providing direct services to children and families in distress for nearly a century. Last year, almost 14,000 children and their families received care and support from us.

Although based in Johannesburg, many of the services we offer reach communities in other areas. The Society's training facilities are open to individuals and groups throughout the country, as well as overseas students who wish to further their studies.

The Society offers many critical, and in some cases, life-saving services to abused, abandoned and neglected children in the communities in which we work. We are also involved in various projects in these communities as part of the work we do, such as Early Childhood Development programmes and a Life Skills programme for girls living on the streets of the Johannesburg inner city.
