Vodacom Change the World Programme

The Vodacom Change the World programme is one of the ways in which Vodacom is able to give back to the community in a positive and sustainable manner. The Vodacom Change the World programme annually enables 10 individuals to make a positive difference by donating their skills to a non-profit organisation (NPO) for a period of 12 months at no cost to the volunteer or NPO. Jo’burg Child Welfare (JCW) is one of the lucky beneficiaries for the 2012/2013 group of volunteers. Rachael Tembo will on 2 May 2012 be joining JCW as a Research and Community Development Co-ordinator. In her role, Rachael will assist JCW’s Orphaned and Vulnerable Children Forum in the work it does with over 55 community-based organisations that focus on child care and protection activities in the areas in which they operate.

Adelaide Cameron from Edenvale loves children and one of the ways in which she shows this love for children is by annually knitting jerseys for children in the care of Jo’burg Child Welfare. This year, Adelaide knitted a phenomenal 144 jerseys both on her knitting machine and by hand. Sincere thanks to 86-year old Adelaide for this wonderful donation.

Welcome

Jo’burg Child Welfare (JCW) is driven by the belief that every human being deserves a childhood free from abuse and neglect. For over 100 years JCW has assisted children who have been abused, abandoned, neglected, consented for adoption, orphaned or made vulnerable (including the many who are infected with or have been affected by HIV and AIDS).

Our team of dedicated and highly qualified professionals work tirelessly to extend vital care and support to underprivileged children, families and communities in Johannesburg. JCW believes that if our children suffer, our community and society suffers too and we therefore seek to build a society where children are cared for and parents and caregivers are supported, creating an atmosphere where our children can grow up strong, safe and happy.

In the 2009/10 financial year, JCW reached over 40,000 beneficiaries through our intervention, adoption, foster care and re-integration, residential care and awareness-building campaigns. A further 23 000 were reached through our Orphaned and Vulnerable Children Forum.

Whilst there is always more to do, our reward comes with each baby who is placed with a loving family, each child who survives abuse and each young person who exits our services and becomes part of a positive, safe environment.
