Welcome

South Africa is a country that faces numerous social challenges resulting from decades of unequal education and social support, poor healthcare and high levels of poverty among the majority of its people.  Jo'burg Child Welfare, represented in the UK by Jo'burg Child Welfare-UK, focuses on the most vulnerable children, who slip between the cracks of a society striving to overcome its past, and who are in danger of abuse and neglect, have been orphaned or abandoned, and who are affected by HIV and AIDS.

Our vision is of a society where children can grow up strong, safe and happy, where parents and caregivers can create the best possible family setting, so that no child suffers.

Last year, our dedicated team of over 200 staff and volunteers reached over 63,000 children and individuals through protection, adoption, foster care, residential care, education and training work.

We trained parents in childcare, and young adults with skills to gain work and make independent lives.  Unwanted and abandoned children were given secure homes.  Thousands of people were made aware of specific risks for children on our continent such as child-trafficking, malnutrition and preventing transmission of HIV.

With funds from the Elton John Aids Foundation we've trained 80 auxiliary social workers to support  some 20,000 children affected by HIV in their own communities.  We do this through our Aganang Learning Centre in partnership with 63 local organisations that help the poorest families with basic needs, as well as obtaining documents they need to get education and healthcare.

Since 1909, Jo’burg Child Welfare has played a pivotal role in child care and protection strategies across the country.  Nationally we advise on legislation to protect children, and through advocacy work we ensure children have a voice to influence services which affect them.  We support those who have no where else to turn.

SPECIAL FOCUS :  Aganang Learning Centre
You can help this work continue by making a regular gift to sponsor a community worker to be specially trained in legal and social work skills, on our 12 month course.  Each trained worker reaches over 100 children every month, and is available every day for those who need help.

To meet the needs of our communities we aim to train 40 community workers every year.  A gift of £100 every month will ensure one community worker has the skills to change lives long after the training is complete.
