The Johannesburg Child Welfare Society currently operates
two Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres catering for approximately
200 children under the age of six. Children receive full-day supervision and participate in a
pre-school education and stimulation programme. Each child receives two nutritious meals and two snacks per day, which ensures that every child at the centres is well fed and learns better.
The value of these ECD centres to the community is undisputed, but because the centres have been established in the poorest communities who do not have the resources to support them, the centres require constant funding from the JCWS (despite stringent cost-containment measures): the provincial government gives the JCWS a subsidy, which cover in the region of 10% of the operating costs of these centres, and each centre has a target of raising up to 30% of it's own budget, but the
balance of 60% of the costs to keep these centres open has to be met by the Society.
Siyakhula and Eldorado Park are the two ECD centres run by the Society:
Siyakhula
Siyakhula serves the Alexandra community, and cares for approximately
120 children from 1 to 6 years of age. Close to a central shopping area and taxi rank, the centre is situated very conveniently for parents to drop off and collect their children on their way to and from work.

MASIBAMBISANE
This centre, situated in Kliptown (near Soweto), accommodates up to
100 children between the ages of two and six. It is one of five full day pre-school facilities in Eldorado Park, which has a very large pre-school population, and is highly valued by the Eldorado Park community. The centre runs a Montessori programme that builds on children's natural desire to learn and encourages them to learn
valuable life skills and values like independence and self-confidence.
