Projects & Services  l  Economic Empowerment

Mission Statement:  "Together, breaking the chains of poverty"

The aim of the Economic Empowerment Programme is to empower youth and parents of children in our care to become self-sufficient, independent entrepreneurs, able to compete in the open and informal labour market. The Programme commenced in October 2002 with the aim of assisting some of the Society's older teenagers and a number of parents to set up and run micro-businesses.
We have established a dedicated Training Centre at the refurbished Drill Hall, Hillbrow and the programme now runs in conjunction with our Thembalethu Centre for Street Girls.

The centre comprises of a business skills training centre, hairdressing salon, catering facility, computer centre and a sewing and beading centre. Participants are taught business skills and attend workshops on topics such as budgeting, marketing, self-esteem and life skills, all of which give the participants the tools necessary for becoming self sufficient in the future.

Mildred Mhlanga who runs the Thembalethu Centre was extremely excited recently when 3 of the girls were able to rent a flat from the proceeds of products which were sold.

Many of the items produced are available as corporate gifts or as individual items and the support of such initiatives will not only provide employment for disadvantaged individuals but also ensure that the project ultimately becomes more self sufficient.

The product range, which can be viewed below, includes beaded cutlery, a novel necklace for sunglasses & spectacles,  African dolls and embroidered cushion covers. For more information or to order contact Mildred Mhlanga on 011 333-1411
